The Fahey Bank Athlete of the Month program recognizes the hard work and dedication of the many high school students throughout Marion County who strive every day to succeed - not only in athletics, but in life.
The Athletes of the Month are chosen by a panel comprised of the athletic directors from the five Marion County schools, along with award-winning Sportswriter Rob McCurdy of the Marion Star. Each of the athletic directors nominate a male and female athlete from their high school who achieved an exceptional performance that month. The panel then votes to choose the male and female winners.
During the four decades that Fahey has been presenting the award, out of the tens of thousands of students who have been eligible, about seven hundred have earned the award. And out of those seven hundred winners, eight special athletes have been able to achieve the award all four years and become a "Fahey-Four."
Each winner is presented with a plaque, and also is permanently recognized with a matching plaque that is placed at their school alongside the plaques of all other past winners from their school. Winners have gone on to successful careers and lives, including as college and professional athletes, medical professionals, business and agribusiness owners, attorneys - and parents of Athlete of the Month winners!
